Catarina Gushiken has a way of teaching that aims for fluidity and free experimentation of media. The starting point is listening to the student and helping him/her develop his/her ideas, intentions and needs, with openness for each of the students to find their own poetic and style.
In 10 years of teaching, she has taught at IED (Instituto Europeo di Design), has given workshops and lectures at renowned universities in Brazil such as PUC (Pontificia Universidade Catolica, Sao Paulo), UNESP (Universidade do Estado de Sao Paulo) and also at CEDIM (Centro de Estudios Superiores de Diseño de Monterrey), in Mexico. Catarina started her art education at the technical high school in Communication Design and bachelor degree in Fashion Design. She had worked for 8 years in the area of fashion design, and became the fashion design coordinator of one of the best known brands in Brazil. But her true passion has always been drawing and painting; motivated by the dream to devote herself entirely to art, she inaugurated her atelier and school – Sala Ilustrada (Illustrated Room). Soon afterwards, she got the postgraduate degree in Art Direction at Faculdade Bela Artes (Belas Artes College), in Sao Paulo.
She has an easygoing personality and mixes different techniques and media on her works. In 2011 and 2013, some of them were selected by publishing company Taschen for the books “Illustration Now! 4” and “Illustration Now! Fashion”. In 2012, Catarina was among the Brazilian artists chosen to participate in the documentary “West Encounters East”, along renowned artists such as Tomie Ohtake, Yutaka Toyota and Takashi Fukushima, which premiered on the public TV network of Florida, USA, and then broadcasted in several countries.
Cata, as she is known by students and friends, starts teaching from where it is necessary, from basic steps of drawing. Different techniques and media are explored: China ink, watercolor, acrylic, oil, ecoline, pastel, pyrography, monotyping, painting on wood, canvas, objects, murals and as far as the imagination of the student goes. Each student arrives with a search and personal goal; many had their portfolios approved by schools such as Central Saint Martins, their works selected for publications, as well as exhibitions and selling of their work. Other just come for the simple pleasure of practice and attainment of their ideas.
